Typical swedish words – “Lagom” and “Fika”

ImageImage

A word that is special for us Swedes is ”lagom”. There is actually no right translation for it but it is like ”just enough”, ”in moderation” or ”appropriate”. It’s ”lagom” hot outside means it not too hot or too cold for me, it’s ”lagom”. ”Lagom” is different for everyone, what’s ”lagom” food for me it’s maybe too much food for you.

Another Swedish word without an english translation is ”fika”. ”Jag fikar” means I’m drinking perhaps coffee and sometimes eating a sandwich or a cookie beside it, often together with friends or family. Coffee is very important to us. Few people drink more coffee than Swedes. A ”fika” per day is pretty ”lagom” normal for us.
